Where I am, and What I Do

I spent two-and-a-half years before that living in lovely San Jose, California. At first, my Berkeley-shaped soul rebelled at moving down to the South Bay, but it grew on me after a while (so much so that after I come back from Hamburg, I might start looking around for some more-permanent real estate . . . but on the other hand, I might use the return as my chance to move back to Berkeley. We'll see.)

I work for Adobe Systems Incorporated. Back in the day, I used to work on Adobe FrameMaker. I did a large chunk of the new book functionality in Frame 6.0; and while I wasn't the one who did the final port of Frame to Linux, I did the first proof-of-concept demo port that helped (eventually) convince the right people that this would be a possible and worthwhile thing.
After some shuffling last year, I moved from Framemaker to Adobe GoLive. (Which is what prompted my move this year from San Jose to Hamburg.) I've been around Adobe long enough now to have appeared on a few splashscreens.

When I'm not working, I may be:

• doggedly improving my German (and playing around with the Deutsche Bahn trip scheduler) in preparation for future trips to Hamburg, Germany.
• out dancing: I've started dancing again, after some lessons to get me back on my feet after a long hiatus. Some nights you might find me at the Cubberley Pavillion or the Starlite Ballroom.
• out hiking, biking, camping, and doing other outdoorsy stuff -- either on my own, with the Sierra Club, or as an Assistant Scoutmaster in my church's Boy Scout troop.
• wrestling with Fontographer in an effort to turn my typeface designs into real fonts.
• out practicing my accordion (a recent passion, taken up after being influenced by the music of such fine bands as Brave Combo and Those Darn Accordions!)

. . . among other things (actually, these are all from my past, San Jose life; I don't do much of any of these in Hamburg, except for speaking German).

Where I've been, and What I've Done

In 1993, I came north to UC Berkeley. (Go Bears!) I graduated from Cal with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in May 1997. While at Cal, I:

• was President of UCSEE (the UC Society of Electrical Engineers), the EECS student society and Cal's IEEE Student Branch.
• was heavily involved in the Wesley Student Movement, occasionally did things with the CSUA, and tried to learn how to ballroom dance with the UC Ballroom Dancers.
• lived in Bowles Hall, someplace that occasionally got some press coverage.

For a couple of summers (1994 & 1995), I worked at Philmont Scout Ranch, near Cimarron, New Mexico. (Take a look at my newly revised & expanded Philmont page! More pictures!)
